Executive Director

The Cooper River Bridge Run is an annual world-class 10K run/walk with a mission to promote physical activity and a healthy lifestyle through education, opportunity, and motivation. The scenic course takes participants through the Town of Mt. Pleasant, over the Cooper River Bridge and through picturesque historic downtown Charleston.

Since the inaugural race in 1978, the Bridge Run has grown to nearly 40,000 participants, making it the 3rd largest 10K in the nation. The Cooper River Bridge Run also serves to spotlight the Charleston area as a destination for fitness and fun and has a substantial economic impact on the Lowcountry in excess of $30 million dollars.

We are searching for a motivated leader to serve as Executive Director. We require someone with the vision and experience to lead a team of dedicated professionals in taking the Cooper River Bridge Run to the next level. We need an individual who can motivate and guide a diverse community of athletes, sponsors, volunteers, business and civic leaders in the task of nurturing and growing this elite opportunity.

Job Summary:

Executive Director is responsible for the management and execution of the Cooper River Bridge Run (CRBR). The employee is required to perform all similar or related duties. The Executive Director is selected and employed directly by the CRBR Board of Directors (BOARD).

Essential Functions:

1. Plans, coordinates and supervises work related to the operation and management of the annual CRBR and all other pursuant events and programs that take place throughout the year.

2. Responsible for the preparation and presentation of CRBR's annual budget to the board for approval.

3. Responsible for the development and execution of written standard operating procedures as approved by the board.

4. Directly responsible for the recruitment and retention of the CRBR's sponsors.

5. Oversees the public relations, marketing and media/social media strategy management of the CRBR operations.

6. Ensures overall CRBR compliance with public safety organizations and the permitting process with all involved governments for the staging of events, as necessary.

7. Directly supervises the Race Director and is responsible for the organizational structure, including up-to-date written job descriptions.

8. Conducts regular staff meetings and ensures annual written staff evaluations for all full-time staff.

9. Attends board meetings and other related committees of the board and prepares appropriate reports to the board and its members.

10. Develops strategic planning and maintains organizational values and principles in cooperation with the board, regulatory and community agencies, sponsors and participants.

11. Attends national conferences and race expos for marketing and promotion of the CRBR as well as the media contact for the event.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's Degree in Special Event Management or related field and 5 years related work experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Knowledge of the principles and practices of event planning, marketing, and management; general safety practices related to special events/running events; exceptional customer service practices.


Ability to manage multiple tasks in a detailed and effective manner; ability to implement cost-effective programs to meet the needs of the Race; ability to administer budgets; ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions and draft effective plans of action.


Excellent organizational and communicative skills; computer literate with current software and programs; excellent interpersonal and public speaking skills.
