Job Description:


The Attending Veterinarian is responsible for the well-being and clinical care of animals used research, testing, teaching, and production. This responsibility extends to monitoring and promoting animal well-being at all times during animal use, and during all phases of the animal's life. The Attending Veterinarian will institute appropriate measure to relieve severe pain or distress, including euthanasia. The Attending Veterinarian should interact collaboratively when making critical decisions regarding animal health and welfare. Important aspects of the role of the Attending Veterinarian and the program of veterinary care include the following.


Ensure veterinarians providing clinical and/or program oversight and support have experience, training and expertise necessary to appropriately evaluate the health and well-being of the species used, in the context of the animal use being carried out by the institution
The Attending Veterinarian must have access to all animals
There must be timely provision of veterinary medical care, and emergency veterinary care must be available at all times, including after work hours, on weekends, and on holidays
The Attending Veterinarian must have oversight of additional aspects of the veterinary care program, such as preventative medicine and health surveillance, medical treatment, establishment of sedation, anesthetic and analgesic guidelines, handling and immobilization, and should have oversight of other related aspects such as housing and husbandry
The Attending Veterinarian should provide guidance and oversight to surgery programs and perioperative care
Professional veterinary staff should remain knowledgeable about the latest practices and procedures to ensure that high quality care is provided to animals
Manage all Alpha Genesis, Inc. (AGI) Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) including creating new SOPs as appropriate
Oversee AGI's YPC Veterinary and Animal Care Program including coordinating AGI Processing, Husbandry and Veterinary Medical activities as appropriate
Back-up veterinary duties for clinical veterinarians by assisting with clinical veterinary care, examination, treatment, surgery and follow-up for colony primates as needed
Ensure Company compliance of Federal regulations of operations
Oversee AGI quarantine facility and procedure and ensure compliance
Oversee Facility inspection for the Yemassee Primate Facility and oversee Facility inspection for the Hampton Primate Facility along with the Director of the Hampton Primate Center
Ensure facility preparations for regulatory and other site visits
Ensure quality assurance and practice standards including providing consultation for AGI research services
Oversee and attend USDA site visits
Other responsibilities as assigned

In addition, the Attending Veterinarian has further responsibilities related to his/her role on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). For example:

There should be regular, clear communication between the Attending Veterinarian and IACUC, and the animal program should be regularly and clearly communicated to the Institutional Official by the Attending Veterinarian
The Attending Veterinarian should have input in protocol review, the development of study and breeding colony removal criteria, and responsible for conduct of research activities.
The Attending Veterinarian and individuals providing care to animals should understand the potential for adverse clinical complications that may arise from experimental procedures
The IACUC, in association with the Attending Veterinarian, has the responsibility for determining that personnel performing surgical procedures are appropriately qualified and trained in the procedures to be performed
The IACUC, in cooperation with the Attending Veterinarian, should be involved in classifying major versus minor surgical procedures


The Attending Veterinarian spends the majority of the time ensuring compliance with Federal guidelines and meeting client deadlines. Physical demands are minimal but may require occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds. Work hours are Monday-Friday, 8 hours per day. There may also be some evening and weekend work based on the needs of the Company.


Delegate the required work assignments and oversee the work performance and completion of assignments of other personnel assigned to the Veterinary Services Division. Oversee and monitor the performance of the animal program as a whole including all aspects of animal husbandry and housing.


DVM/VMD from a veterinary medical college accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Current state licensure in at least one state and able to obtain licensure in South Carolina within 60 days of hire. The Attending Veterinarian must be eligible to obtain DEA licensure. Five-seven years of laboratory primate experience is required. Post-doctoral or veterinary research experience is preferred. ACLAM eligibility or diplomate status is highly preferred. The Attending Veterinarian must have excellent reading, writing, mathematics and computer skills (Access, MS Word, Excel, email and internet).


South Carolina Drivers' License or equivalent. Current DVM licensure in at least one state and ability to obtain South Carolina License within 60 days.


Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and government regulations. Ability to write reports, SOPs, protocols, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from all team members of Alpha Genesis, Inc. including managers, as well as clients and the general public.


Ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only a limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule format.


The AGI work environment characteristics described below are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job, with or without reasonable accommodations. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to inclement weather, including cold, heat with high humidity, and precipitation. The noise level is usually moderate. The job requires the ability to direct those catching animals in safe and proper procedures. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to stand, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must be able to undergo fit testing for a N95 respirator mask. Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds may be required. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Additionally, the employee must be able to distinguish colors. Work hours are 8 hours per day, five days per week. There may be overtime hours required as well as weekend and evening work based on animal health and Company needs.
