SUMMARY
- The role of the Safety, Health & Environmental (SHE) Manager is
to lead the safety, health & environmental efforts of the facility
with integrity, conviction, and courage. This will be accomplished
by exercising practical business knowledge to ensure both
regulatory and company SHE requirements are implemented. The SHE
Manager must instill the belief that aggressive goals can be
achieved, identify what "needs to be done," assess the degree of
urgency, prioritize risk, and execute a plan of action. The SHE
Manager must motivate, inspire, and engage others to excel and work
towards a common goal. The manager must demonstrate an intense
desire to create new avenues of opportunity; be willing to dig into
details during challenging situations.FUNCTIONSPrimary
Responsibilities/Essential Functions
- Assess existing processes against both internal and external
regulatory requirements
- Provide SHE compliance, risk management and project management
leadership to the facility
- Develop, coordinate and implement facility SHE management
system, goals, policies, procedures, and work instructions
- Coordinate with U.S. Sugar SHE leadership, regulators,
customers, employees, contractors, and other stakeholders regarding
facility SHE matters
- Develop and monitor SHE CAPEX expenditures and budgets
- Audit and assess SHE processes; and implement corrective
actions
- Monitor and oversee routine SHE compliance activities (i.e.
SPCC, Air)
- Ensure the facility's strategy, processes, and resources are
aligned with the company's vision and plan
- Ensure that adequate resources are identified for regulatory
compliance and risk management activities
- Negotiate permit and minor enforcement matters with
regulators
- Monitor local SHE regulatory developments and implement
appropriate response processes
- Establish and implement SHE data collection, provide analysis
of processes to operations management
- Continually develop SHE knowledge and competency, develop both
federal and state regulatory expertise, and participate in local
and state level SHE activitiesCompany Conformance StatementsIn the

- Is an active member of the facility SHE Program
- Maintains good working knowledge of SHE policies, rules, and
procedures applicable to the area of responsibility and ensures all
applicable requirements are adhered to
- Ensures employees are provided required training for area
assigned, and jobs and tasks prior to assigning work
- Ensures area of responsibility is maintained in orderly and
safe manner
- Ensures unsafe working conditions are remedied as soon as
practicableQUALIFICATIONSEducation/Professional
Certifications/Licenses/ExperienceBasic qualifications:
- 4-year degree; preferably in SHE, science, or engineering
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification
- Knowledge of safety, health & environmental regulations
- Must have a least 5-10 years of management experience with
direct supervision of employees in safety, health, and
environmental in a manufacturing environmentPreferred
qualifications:
- Master's degree, preferably in SHE, science, or
engineering
- Other professional certification/registration preferred (e.g.,
REM)
- 10-15 years of management experience with direct supervision of
employees in safety, health and environmental in a manufacturing
environmentKnowledge/Skills/Abilities (including any physical
demands)The following are the basic qualifications:
- Demonstrated communication skills (verbal, written,
presentations)

- Leadership, management, and organization skills
- Problem solving skills
- Experience in diverse workforces
- Proficient in Microsoft applications
- Experience in NFPA requirements (preferred)Working Conditions
