Our AgencyThe Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) is the state agency that focuses solely on policies, programs, and services for people with mental health challenges, substance use disorders, intellectual and developmental disabilities, or any combination of these. As Georgia's public safety net, DBHDD operates six field offices and five hospitals throughout the state within three program areas: behavioral health, developmental disabilities and hospital services.Georgia Regional Hospital at Savannah (GRHS) is a state-funded multi-service facility operated by the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities. The hospital provides quality care to mentally ill adults and individuals living with intellectual and developmental disabilities from its 34-county catchment area in Southeast Georgia. GRHS opened in December of 1970 with a design to decentralize mental health services in the state and treat people nearer to their homes and families. The hospital provides evaluation and treatment to clients needing care. The hospital's admitting office is a psychiatric emergency receiving facility open 24 hours a day.GRHS is seeking candidates for the position of General Trades Craftsman with our Engineering and Maintenance Department. This position will work on 1st and 2nd Shifts, varied hours, 40 hours a week as a full-time position.FOR THIS TYPE OF EMPLOYMENT, STATE LAW REQUIRES A NATIONAL AND STATE BACKGROUND CHECK AS A CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT. Job DescriptionThis position performs a variety of semiskilled and skilled building trades work in the repair, maintenance or construction of state buildings and related structures. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Installs and maintains security, climate control, and other facilities systems.
  • May serve as a lead worker and/or supervise support staff.
  • Assembles, installs and/or repairs wiring, electrical and electronic components, pipe systems and plumbing, machinery, and equipment.
  • Diagnoses and corrects mechanical and structural problems, checking blueprints, repair manuals, and parts catalogs.
  • Ensures all maintenance conforms to quality standards and designated timeliness. Handles hazardous materials according to laws and regulations.
  • Installs, maintains, evaluates, and repairs any components of the systems.
  • Operates plant equipment and building automation systems.
  • Operates trade related tools and equipment; maintains/assists an accurate inventory of all materials and equipment.
  • Performs basic and skilled painting, carpentry, and roofing tasks.
  • Performs general maintenance and repair work on facilities and equipment.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance to ensure that machines operate smoothly, efficiently, and physical condition of buildings does not deteriorate.
  • Reads, utilizes blueprints, plans, drawings and sketches to determine the work to be performed and resources required.
  • Renovates or builds additions to existing facilities.
  • Repairs and performs maintenance on plumbing fixtures, lighting, air vents and air conditioning units and facilities.
  • Wears safety equipment and observes all safety practices and regulations. Preferred Skills/Qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates who, in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications, demonstrate some or all the following skills/experience:Must have at least One year experience in building repairs and maintenance
    • General Mechanical Knowledge.
    • Experience in installation or repair.
    • Skilled in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, hardware, lock installation, painting, wallboard, industrial maintenance OR technical school graduate and skilled problem-solver.
    • Experience in construction of previous facilities preferred but not required.
